Models and algorithms for Wireless Power Transfer in Ad-Hoc Networks and the IoT

Recent technology advances have enabled Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) to be successfully commercialised. In the context of ad-hoc networks and the IoT, the research community has grasped since several years the qualitative importance of WPT as it enables to decouple the problem of efficient energy management from other network operations. A Wireless Rechargeable Sensor Network (WRSN) consists of a set of sensors motes, a data Sink and a set of wireless chargers able to wirelessly recharge sensors that lie in their vicinity. In this talk, we will discuss the importance and benefits of WPT via the prism of the WRSN paradigm. We will review early models and heuristics that were initially used to identify the key algorithmic aspects of WPT. We will then review recent, state of the art results in the field in terms of more refined and rigorous WPT models, present key optimisation problems as well as interesting notions and concepts that are unique in WPT networks.

Dr. Constantinos Marios Angelopoulos is Lecturer in Computing at Bournemouth University (U.K.), specializing in future and emerging paradigms of computer networks and distributed systems. Previously, he spent 3.5 years as a postdoctoral researcher at University of Geneva (CH) under the prestigious Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship for Foreign Researchers. Marios is the founding Program Leader of the three IoT Master courses offered in BU (MSc IoT; IoT & Cyber Security; IoT & Data Analytics). He is also founder and head of the Future & Complex Networks (FlexNet) research group. Marios' research interests include algorithm and protocol design and evaluation, end-to-end system architectures, the design and implementation of proof-of-concept and pilot testbeds. He is serving as a TPC member of several internationally renowned conferences (DCOSS, MSWiM, ICDCS, etc.) and journals (ToN, COMNET, JSS, ComCom, etc) and is very active in R&D projects at a national and European level.
